He Wants To Be A BroncoThe tug-of-war for one of Mackay's most prized signatures is expected to end with teenage sensation Dane Gagai linking with the Brisbane Broncos.
In what has been a clamber of the codes, rugby union and rugby league officials have been scrambling for the services of the talented 17-year-old.
And although he is captain of the First XV rugby union side at Brisbane Boys College (BBC), Gagai is leaning towards the Broncos after declaring his passion for league.
According to father Ray, a local league legend who was also recruited by Brisbane in 1989, Dane "is expected to sign up with the Broncos," who have had their eye on him for almost two years.
"He was approached by the Queensland Reds and the ARU (Australian Rugby Union) also came on board but Dane told them that his heart is with rugby league," Ray said yesterday.
It's believed the North Queensland Cowboys were also keen to snare Gagai after offering him a scholarship but the fleet-footed centre is eager to remain in Queensland's south-east.
"His cousin Josh Hoffman is with the Broncos too and I think he likes it in Brisbane," Ray said.
Despite admitting his preference for rugby league, Gagai is yet to put pen to paper and is in the process of getting a manager to help with negotiations.
"Nothing's changed; he's still pretty much in the same position as he was a month ago," mother Tania said.
"He hasn't signed up with them (Brisbane) yet and is still having discussions." Gagai, who played junior league with Souths, has excelled on the paddock and in the classroom at BBC, joining a list of students on the school's honour board for his academic achievements.
