The Perth Wildcats have opened up a three-game road trip with a thrilling 105-101 triumph over the Melbourne Tigers at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night.
Leading by a comfortable 15 points at the final break, the Wildcats lost the lead with two minutes remaining before steadying late to cause the biggest upset of the season so far.
But the story could have been so different for the Tigers if back-up point-guard Nathan Croswell hadn't missed two free throws late in the game.
With the Tigers leading by one, Crosswell went 0-of-2 from the charity stripe, before the Wildcats went up the other end to score through an Alex Loughton tip-in.
The Tigers failed to score on their next possession and when Shawn Redhage scored 1-of-2 from the line, the home side had a chance to force overtime, but Ebi Ere's attempt was blocked by Isiah Victor.
It was a well deserved victory for the Wildcats who forced the Tigers into some sloppy play and were clearly the better team for the opening three quarters.
Redhage was sensational for the 'Cats, the Olympian finishing the match with a game-high 31 points and 11 rebounds, while Peter Crawford (17 points, five rebounds, four steals) and Darnell Hinson (14 points, eight assists) were inspirational all night.
Chris Anstey top-scored for the Tigers with 29 points, import Rod Grizzard contributed 23, but Ere (14 points) and David Barlow (scoreless) were down on their usual form.
Wildcats coach Conner Henry was ecstatic with the result and said he never gave up hope, even when his side was headed late in the match.
"I felt it was our time to get a win," Henry said.
"We had been giving up leads in some games this year and I was just hoping we would hang in there and find a way to win."
"And we did"
Tigers coach Al Westover described his side's performance as 'sloppy' and said plenty of work needed to be done on the training court.
"At times tonight I thought we had the wrong guy taking the wrong shot," Westover said.
"We have to know individually and collectively what our strengths are. We were a little bit anxious there. We just have to learn to execute a little better."
The Wildcats obviously came ready to play as they continually harassed the Tigers and forced them into eight first quarter turnovers in an impressive defensive display.
Crawford's hustle exemplified the Wildcats defensive effort in the first term as the underrated shooting guard compiled three steals and eight first quarter points to guide the visitors to an unlikely 27-22 lead at quarter-time.
The turnovers continued to pile up for the home side as the Wildcats pushed their advantage out to eight (36-2

midway through the second period, but some strong work inside from Anstey and Grizzard allowed the Tigers to draw closer.
Two big threes from Ere put the Tigers out by four (49-45) with a little under two minutes remaining in the half, but Hinson drained a triple from the top of the arc on the Wildcats final possession to allow the visitors to take a slender (50-49) lead into the main break.
Shortly after the resumption, Barlow picked up his fifth personal foul which forced the Tigers to rejig their line-up, but the Wildcats continued to score with ease.
Redhage and Loughton were unstoppable inside the key as the visitors increased their buffer to 13 (70-57) midway through the third quarter and when Stephen Weigh came off the bench to knock down consecutive triples the margin was out to 18.
Crawford knocked down a three to start the final term, but Daryl Corletto and Tommy Greer came off the bench to spark the Tigers and give them a chance of victory.
The Tigers worked the ball into Anstey and when the big man nailed a tough mid-range fadeaway with two minutes remaining, the home side had taken their first lead since early in the first term.
With a vocal crowd behind them it seemed that the Tigers were going to pull of an unlikely victory, but the Wildcats steadied in the clutch to pick up their third win of the season.
The Tigers have two days off before tackling the Adelaide 36ers at home on Saturday night, while the Wildcats travel to Wollongong to face the Hawks on Friday night.
