There is a lot of pride in making the GF when you are not the dominant team, let alone winning it. Which makes it a cardinal sin to lose when you have been the best team throughout the year, hey Geelong. I may have wasted half an hour of HW time but the figures should incite debate. Could not be bothered doing the others but I doubt they'd compare.
# of GF losses – Team – # of GF loses after finishing on top – Years - % of GF loses after finishing on top.
25 - Pies - 7 - 1905, 1915, 1922, 1926, 1966, 1970, 1977 – 28% 13 - Carlton – 6 – 1910, 1916, 1921, 1932, 1941, 1976 – 46% 14 - Essendon – 5 - 1898, 1948, 1968, 1990, 2001 – 36% 11 - Richmond – 3 – 1933, 1944, 1982 – 27%
So what are your thoughts? Is it better to make the GF and lose or is it better to not make it at all? Does it make a difference if you are expected to win or are the 2007 and 2008 losses exactly the same? Are the Pies to be commended for making 18 GF's when they were the not the best team for the year? From the other thread, I'll delete it soon. Sorry lover xxoo.

Got a list of finals played? Did you missed seeing the qestion because you were too hot under the colar.
26 years since the Tigers have played off in a GF. 26 years since you last lost a GF. Pretty ordinary stuff. Collingwood have made 3 GF's in that time, and at least won one of them. Since Richmond's last GF appearance in 1982 Hawthorn have played off in 9 GF's, and come away with 6 premierships. Dear oh dear, what have Richmond been up to all this time? Certainly a very moderate performer in the modern era, those Tige's!!

Collingwood (25)
a lot of empty space
Essendon (14) Carlton (13) Richmond (11) Sthh Melb/Sydney (9) Geelong (8 ) Fitzroy (5) Hawthorn (5) Melbourne (5) North Melbourne (5) St Kilda (4) West Coast (2) Footscray/WB (1) Port Adelaide (1) Brisbane Lions (1)
So, if I read this correctly, the only team that's never lost a Grand Final is Fremantle? Wow, what a great record they have...

Still, let's not knock freo. I'm a great believer in starting all AFL records from the time when the AFL actually started. VFL stats shouldn't count.

MCA will eat you... spose its pretty easy to forget the crows...they never do anything noteworthy, and you can't lose a GF if you're not good enough to get there in the first place

Sorry, I only counted the list without looking at the team names. 15 plus freo makes sixteen. If you're going to count VFL records alongside AFL ones, Brisbane and Fitzroy should be on the same line. Otherwise you have to start counting other defunct teams. Wasn't there one called University or something? Brisbane/Fitzroy (6)

Brisbane and Fitzroy should not be on the same line because the Bears have to be somewhere. They are 3 different football clubs. And yes, University played like 6 seasons before WWI. Never lost a Granny. Never even lost a final i think.
