What a pity that Greg Normans proposed World Golf Tour was shot down by the powers of the USPGA back in the mid 90's, some of the commentary from U.S golf fans about the Ryder Cup have been nothing short of embarrassing for golf, unless the European player has either been to college in the U.S or plays on the U.S Tour then they hardly even know some of them!!
I think it's brilliant that Padraig has one a major in the U.S, but also think that it's quite amazing how some U.S players didn't want to play at the British Open and very few of them even featured in the Top 20!!
It shows that the majority of U.S golfers have been conditioned to play the American style of target golf and not real golf where shot shaping and playing smart golf in tough conditions is a talent!
I just wish that more pro's would forgo the riches of the U.S and play all over the world, a few do but not enough!!

College golf in the states is all target golf, they are bred on it. Its all about stats there as well.
I certainly agree with your point that many Americans are not capable of playing abroad as well. Kenny Perry didn't even go to the British Open, using the excuse of suring up his Ryder Cup position as an excuse, which was absolute bull.
