What is wrong with these fools running the game?

Dead set the NBL has started......and nobody knows about it???

crowd of 1573 turned up to see the Spirit play......guess what? anyone under 17 was free entry!!!! OMFG!!!

Seriously I am a former Kings fan that doesn't give a shit about the Spirit.....but seriously......

Mate, I do not see the NBL running on after this season if this sort of crap continues.

It might be an idea to bring back the Kings too.

good crowds in Melbourne but as ive said before,1580 fans turned up no advertising and Sydney is still dead for basketball even Mark Worthington said no one used to no when the games were on and people would say what are u you doing tonight hed reply im playing a game !
Also the NRl finals are on so that could have something to do with it but yes it needs advertising as under17 for free would fill in melbourne.

make a comeback d-train.
bring kenny mac and leon trimmingham with ya.

gaze doesnt give me much confidence either.

we need smart people running the game, not people who can hit three's.

Bring back the Kings and Bullets and move the "spirit" to Canberra (or another city, just not Sydney). People in Sydney have bought the Kings name, so I think that is a hint that they will be back.

Yeh considering their was minimal advertising (so I hear), and the fact the AFL & NRL are in the middle of the finals. The A-League played their first round in 2 weeks.
Its a bad time to start a season. They need to wait until after the footy has finished.
I don't think the NBL will be too worried with that figure, unless it continues like this after the footy is finished

Yeah they have too do more advertising, I've seen nothing as in TV adds in Adelaide as well, the only way I found the NBL was starting was through the Fantasy Game, sad isn't!

I think it's time the NBL uses the example set by the FFA.

The NBL atm is currently on the same path as the old NSL competition, admin having no idea on how to run the league, not being able to attrack the Sponsorship dollars which is a must for it be able to advertise throughout the Media.

We need a name change for the NBL. eg Australian Basketball League, chuck in a new logo, a few new big name sponsors, Free-to-Air televised games to give the league a nation wide audience, because lets face it people aren't going to get Foxtel just for the NBL, and Bingo!

How can we have a team from New Zealand, and not in Brisbane. What a joke and an embarassment to australian sport!

I'm sure this will fall on deaf ears though!

Maybe they should change their name to the 'B-League' and try to capitalize on the success of the A-League.

Its an absolue joke of a league, and it shouldnt be cos there is decent players. Admin is a joke, I agree that Gaze is only good for three pointers and dunlop commercials. Just have a team in major cities or where the sport is popular. Too many franchise name changes and whatever are killing off everyones loyalty. Just start from scratch or they will go more and more into debt. Its a brilliant game going to waste!

I refer you and all other doomsdayers to the following article from Boti Nagy in today's Adelaide Advertiser.

Heed his advice and find something better to do than subject us to more of the same dystopian drivle.

Quote:
BOTI NAGY wraps up the opening weekend of the 2008-09 NBL season.

GIVE me a break! For God's sake – enough!

Enough of this steady stream of BS from the mindless mainstream media. Aaaaarggggh! So sick of it.

And enough already too with the "Melbourne is the greatest team of all-time" BS.

Can we just give it a rest, people?

I mean, far be it for me to suggest someone does an ounce of research before putting keystroke to cyberspace – speaking of lazy journos, how is that latest "exclusive" Fox column coming there, Steve? – but can somebody please at least rake some of the manure before it is foisted all over us?

Firstly, let me address this to every half-a$$ed journo of the MMM (that's the mindless mainstream media, not the radio station) called in to write a story with even an oblique reference to the NBL.

Can you just stop calling it "near-death", "bankrupt" or "on its knees" for long enough to witness this.

The 31st season of the league started on Saturday.

Just for your information, the NSL lasted 28 years with 42 different teams before it was revamped into the A-League four seasons ago.

The national netball league came and went after 11 seasons, making way for the trans-Tasman competition.

I could go on, but why spoil you? The point is, it's starting to give me a pain in the ask to constantly see the NBL treated as second-rate and told it is bankrupt because Brisbane, Sydney and Singapore are gone.

Wasn't the Bullets' demise at least in part due to the savaging of its owner's childcare empire? How does that reflect on the NBL?

Singapore is soaring along playing its own schedule and is far from bankrupt.

OK. The Kings situation was diabolical and the league is complicit because it signs off on ownership changes. (Just as it is complicit in murking the waters at Brisbane by endorsing the new group which came in – press conference and all – then bailed out after six weeks, leaving Eddy Groves in the lurch. The NBL should be wearing hot egg over that effort.)

Is the league soaring?

Hell no.

It has started with no coordinated launch, no sponsor and a minimised television presence. (At least Steve will have time now to write a new Carfino's Corner. That halfway mark report from January 4 last season was an exceptional piece of insightful investigative work though, I must admit. It'd take most of us a while to follow that up too.)

Yet, on one hand, everyone agrees the league needed less teams and it's happened by natural attrition.

Sure, we can't wait for the BA-NBL review to revamp the league next season but I'm so sick and tired of the NBL becoming the whipping-boy for any lazy journo of the MMM to get in his/her cheap-shots.

By the way, whatever happened to the Claxton Shield, guys and gals? Been and gone. Yet still the NBL remains.

Is upgrading its website in-season again a joke?

Why, yes, of course. The stats were pretty fouled up at the weekend too. But how will the standard on the floor be this season?

Absolutely crackerjack. Let's talk about that, or is that a positive?

Less teams, a better talent spread. Oh yeah. This might just be the sharpest season of the 31.

And now, please, let's stop with the "Melbourne has the greatest team of all time" *****.

I'll pose the authors and perpetrators of that line the following questions.

When the Tigers drop a game this season, does that make the team which beats them greater than the greatest line-up of all-time?

How would the stellar starting stud-stream of Barlow-Ere-Mackinnon-Grizzard-Anstey go against Blicavs-Smith-Morseau-Barnett-Sengstock?

Or against Carroll-Graham-Leader-Fisher-Dillon? Or Green-Pearce-Ali-Davis-Jones? Or for that matter, Gaze-Copeland-Giddey-Timmons-Bradtke? Or McDonald-Tucker-Thomas-Anstey-Mottram?

I could go on but the point here is twofold. If you don't recognise those few quintets I pulled off the top of my head (with apologies to Perth, Sydney and South East Melbourne's best teams) then you're in no way qualified to say jack-sheet about "the greatest line-up of all time".

So just sit there and shut the pluck up.

Here's something else. Every five I named led its team to a championship. Until the Tigers do that, for God's sake give it a rest.

As I have stated previously - next season, 12 teams:

Cairns
Townsville
Brisbane
Gold Coast
Sydney (Kings)
Wollongong
Perth
Adelaide
Melbourne
South
New Zealand
and move West Sydney (aka Sydney G@y Spirit) elsewhere....possibly to Canberra if it is viable.

Melbourne can support 2 teams, every other major city has one.

Would be great to see Canberra, Hobart and a regional VIC club (e.g. Geelong) again in the league one day, but not straight away.

Boti Nagy is the best basketball writer in Australia. I read alot of his stuff in the Advertiser and this seemed very out of character. he must of been really fired up over all the people talking so much *****. Good on him.

Agreed. He's usually a lot drier in his criticisms - that one had steam coming off the page. Always a good read though, he doesn't sugar-coat things.

what a load of waffle, brissie had 2 chances to find another owner and failed both times miserably. sydney had to resort to handouts from it's fans and still couldn't save itself.

brisbane, sydney and singapore represent over 50% of the potential television audience, don't give me this spirit bs no one wants to see a westies team associated with a pack of homos, and country hick towns like townsville and cairns make-up barely 20% of qld.

I'm not even really a basketball fan, but hell I'd love to sit down and watch my team play on free to air during prime time.

What the hell are they doing wrong? Australia is full of sports nuts and basketball is played by almost every kid growing up.

I want to watch some mother *****king basketball on *****king free to air TV and I want some *****king ads telling me when the *****king game is on.

Someone go out and find a pimp that can make this ***** happen.

Need more Australian sport on free to air.

Looks like they have the format for the finals already:

http://www.nbl.com.au/default.aspx?s=finals

I don't agree with this format, should be 1v6, 2v5, 3v4.
