I think carlton are building a superteam, unless they run into salary cap problems or injuries I think they will be close to unbeatable in a few years. look at their top ten picks since 2004:

2004, pick 9 - Jordan Russel
2005, pick 1 - marc murphy, pick 4 - josh kennedy
2006, pick 1 - bryce gibbs
2007, pick 1 - matthew kreuzer
thro in judd, fev, waite, stevens, carazzo, possibly warnock.

What do ya reckon?

I've been thinking that for a few years, and each year they disappoint. They have a talented list that should have made finals this year, and once again they failed to deliver. I don't see them being a super power any time soon.

i still think they are young, i reckon 09 or 10 they'll dominate. i just can't remember a team having so many high draft picks.

yeah i agree. at least the afl got it right with not giving priority picks at start of first round any more ala 2005, that was ridiculous

I see them doing a St Kilda, who also had a heap of high draft picks, and never quite lived up to the expectation.

The thought of a Carlton Superteam makes my skin crawl however I expect them to be competitive again next year and to make the finals. I think their midfield is quite exceptional but either end they struggle especially if Fev & Waite are held under control.

carlton are going to be a good team becausae their midfield is going to be amazing however, if they dont fix up the forward line i doubt theyll be close to a superteam. also, their backline is fairly poor, need to get some quliaty defenders.

geelong and wce have showed that if a midfield is good enough, they can carry a team. neither of them had a dominant forward line, although the wce backline was pretty bloody good.

With blokes like Waite and O'halpan down back, the Carlton 'superteam' will not be able to stop teams kicking a winning score.

Oh, and they need another forward or 5 to help Fev kick a score.

Geelong are dominating now and have not had a draft pick higher then #6 in the past 10 or so years at least. Saint Kilda have had heaps and are still ordinary

This just goes to show that you do not need high draft picks to be a good team, and you won't automatically be a good team JUST because you have a lot of high choices..

Geelongs AA players (and nominees) -
Scarlett - Father/Son - Not sure how highly he was ranked as a junior
Ablett - Father/Son - Was ranked only as a 2nd or 3rd round selection. Came from the same Falcons side as Hodge and Bartel and was not rated nearly as highly
Bartel - #8 selection
Corey - #8
Egan - #62
Enright - # 47
Harley - #37
S Johnson - #24
Ling - #38
Mackie - #7 (draft smokie, not expected to go in the top 2 rounds)
Milburn - #48
Mooney - #56
Selwood - #7

And for good measure throw in -
Chapman - #31
Kelly - #17
Stokes - #61
Gamble - #47

It's fair to say I'm happy with the way things are going now.

Though there will be a big cleanout of deadwood this year. Don't be surprised if 8 players are dumbed because that's what Ratten has suggested may happen.

Some likely to go are:

Ackland
Saddington
O'hAilpin Bros
Benjamin
Hartlett
Blackwell
Bannister

Skating on thin ice:

Jackson
Edwards
Wiggins

Jamison and Jacobs will be promoted to the senior list and Warnock is likely too.

An irishman, Zak Touhy, who has been told to have the pace of Usain Bolt, is likely to be drafted to the rookie list

yeah he left but they got judd for him. pretty good swap. I was just saying how many high draft picks they have had, you can thro in pick 3 07 which they also traded for judd.

Geelongs success is due to an awesome backline, awesome midfield, and a forward line capable of converting opportunities into goals

geelongs backline has been extremely strong for years! i don't think i'd say their midfield has carried the team.
