"Oh so the world wide disapproval is because of them being right wing?"
Yes, certainly, the policies which have earned them so much hostility recently are those of a very right-wing administration. What's the problem.
Lord K - Of course most of the people polled don't know much about Obama, but that's not really the point. They know enough about Bush and Co (or their actions) to know they can't stand THEM. This is probably regarded as a plus by many Americans, who love to see themselves as the sole protectors of the sacred flame, beset on all sides by the misguided. America is the Shining City on the Hill.

What's that got to do with it? Human beings are as often as not motivated by self-interest. They'll get in if the USA will let them (not easy with the current hysteria about immigration) and then they'll themselves become super-American, gleefully back the country's bullying, and vote for McCain.

7 or 8 months ago a poll was done on what the Americans call " middle America" and 65% said they would not vote for a black or female president, at that stage they were both running for the democratic ticket.
Interesting to see how the votes fall at election time.

I know a fair few (legal) Latin-American migrants, and plenty of Asians, over there who are right behind the GOP. Once they see that the Republicans are trying to stomp all over illegal immigration, and not targeting those who migrate legally, they become much more receptive to the party's other policies.
