actually i saw somewhere that the tour de france is the most watch sporting event... not sure if it meant annually or included the olympics etc. but still you can see why, every man and his dog in france gets out and stands by the side of the road, not to mention massive numbers watching broadcasts.
for me though the RWC is the one i look forward to the most.
but i think the olympics would shade the soccer WC in terms of total viewers!

The largest sporting event each year by way of paying spectators is the US Open tennis. Not saying it is the greatest, too subjective. Have to say the Olympics just gone in Beijing was for the most part exteremely boring. Too many events that are rubbish. Beijing also didn't seem a great place to party and hence lacked the carnivale atmosphere enjoyed in Sydney, despite all the $bns the Chinese spent. I find soccer too difficult to score and though watched many matches of last world cup and Euro, found myself getting too many cups of tea or doing something in between. The best sporting event this year from spectator/atmosphere perspective, has to be the Mens Wimbledon Final, even though Fed lost

( Yeah? US Open? Never knew that. I guess 2 weeks in New York would be pretty massive. For pure theatre and tradition it's hard to go past Wimbledon for the greatest tennis tournament .... But in terms of the greatest I think the Soccer World Cup - not too many sports can boast such interest in qualifying for the main tournament, let alone the tournament itself!

I love state of origin as much as the next bloke, but the world cup is the only actual sport that the world plays (maybe basketball too). So there for its the biggest.
Superbowl is blown out of proportion by arrogant yanks

Superbowl is blown out of proportion by arrogant yanks depends on the criteria a personal choice for me ... would involve a lot of League of course but I know outside NSW & QLD my choices wouldn't rate too highly .... but other then the olympics & cricket world cup etc.. I barely have a passing interest in anything else
