Sheesh... guy isn't even in the best ten in the NBA... has never even made an All-NBA 2nd team, let alone a 1st.

The REAL best player in the world would NEVER label him/herself the best player in the world. What a punk. Didn't like him before, like him even less now.

Err... not yet. Maybe one day, but not until he plays defense. On the opponent's best player.

Firstly, the article is laughable and I've lost any respect I had for Paul Pierce. It's almost not worth typing, but there's at least a dozen players I'd rate above him (at least) He has absolutely nothing on Kobe, Lebron, C3P0.

BUT, I think RobbieT 's call is a little silly. The best player in the world could quite easily be a *****y ***** and label himself such.

Am I shocked? Not the slightest. Since being drafted, Pierce has always had a chip on his shoulder about how awesome he was. With a Finals MVP and Ring, he thinks that is evidence. Whatever Paul, you weren't even the best player on your team during the season. Barring that 40 point game against Lebron, and his so-called "SUPER AWESOME DEFENSE ON KOBE-JUST ASK ME", I cant say you were head and shoulders above everyone else. P.S. Ray Ray guarded Kobe as well Paul whilst you had the Radman. Gee that looks like fun.

I agree that the best player in the world COULD be c0cky and lebel himself the best, but really, Jordan was the best in the world at the time and he NEVER (as far as I know) labeled himself such (at least publicly). My point is the REAL best player in the world knows he is the best, but not labeling himself as such only enhances the label IMHO. When the best in the world feel they need to say it publicly and so strenuously, they don't deserve the label.

people are overreacting a bit.

i love it how a celtics fan suddenly has no respect for him.

paul pierce has always been underrated, he was the third best swingman behind kobe and AI for a few years (before the arrivals of wade and lebron), and i always hated it that people rated vinsanity and t-mac above him. pierce doesnt have their highlight reel dunks, but hes always been a much smarter player.

anyone who says that the best player in the world has to be humble is incredibly naive. pierce said it in public, half the nba all-stars in the past 20 years would have said it in the locker room, training facilities, etc.

i think the title of the thread is spot on- laughable. theres no need to hate him for this, just laugh it off.

the only person who should have a real gripe with this is KG. all season long they were the 'big three', deferring to each other and speaking of themselves as a unit rather than individuals. if i was kg, id be a bit *****ed off about pierce suddenly talking about himself as individually the 'best player in the world'.

Firstly: lemme guess - Celtics fan yourself?

And... Sorry - disagree.
As mentioned before, guy's never even made an NBA second team, and he has the cajones to say this?

I don't know that it's a lack of respect (from a C's fan), but it's one thing to be humble, another entirely to be guilty of what's really an incredible level of hubris.
Yes, KG could be *****ed, but I think the vast majority of guys will actually laugh at him. Especially given the performance of the current US team in the Olympic prelims...

lakers fan actually.

if you dont think pierce has been on of the top swingmen for a fair while now, then thats your opinion, and arguments certainly can be made either way.

most nba players are incredibly arrogant, pierce is no different. sure it was stupid to say hes the best in the world, but hes not the first player to say it and he wont be the last. most players dont say it to newspapers, but i guess he didnt think offhand comments he made to a spanish paper from a youth event in spain would be given too much circulation.

and i agree with you that most guys will laugh at him, i believe i said as much in my last post.

Theres nothing wrong with what he said.
If you want to be the best player in the world, you gotta believe it first. i think this is just his way of trying to convince HIMSELF he is the best.
That brings confidences, which will help him with his game.
Yeh he is not the best, but if he wants to go round proclaiming it, then let him do it. Thats what 'opinions' are for.

This is almost word for word what i was gonna post. Why go around saying someone you have to play against is the best and inflate their ego and their confidence. Talk yourself up, build your own confidence. Self belief is one of the most important aspects of life, let alone sport.

Also, I have rated Pierce for a while. I have had his guernsy for a while and Ireally liek him. He's obviously not in the upper echelon of players in the league but I have always believed he was not too far behind...

It's one thing to do that in the mirror, another entirely to do it to the press.
He want's 'best'? Have a look at Beijing. Another level entirely.

Well I tell myself everyday in the mirror that I am the toughest person in the world. It is my opinion. BUt the truth is, CHuck Norris would have me for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. It is one thing to convince myself that I am the best but it is a totally different thing to go out and announce it to everyone.

Moral of the Story: Dont f*ck with the Chuck!!

interesting point.....though I don't recal Kobe defending Duncan/Yao/Boozer? heh

As for LeBrons defense....he has improved that every year he has played. Did you see how man ytriple doubles he got this year? He single handedly took that ***** ***** team of the Cavs and got them deep into the playoffs and went within 1 game of beating the champions.

Anyway....LeBron is my pick as the best
