Honda eye Heidfeld deal
Team boss hints at move for German driver

Honda could opt to sign Nick Heidfeld should the German find himself without a BMW drive for next season.

According to reports, BMW are dissatisfied with Heidfeld's results this season as the German has often lagged by his lesser-experienced team-mate Robert Kubica.

As a result the team is rumoured to be looking for a replacment, with Fernando Alonso being touted as their number one target.

However, Heidfeld needn't worry about being without a race-seat for next season, as Honda team boss Nick Fry has admitted an interest in signing the German.

"I have already spoken to him (Heidfeld) - and it was more than just a 'hello,'" he told spox.com

Should Heidfeld sign with Honda it will most probably be as Rubens Barrichello's replacement, as the team is expected to retain Jenson Button.

Hmmm, interesting. I think Button and Heidfeld would be a good combination. I didnt think Heidfeld was that out of favour, though. I wonder if Barrichello coud find a new seat?

It all depends on Alonso.
If he goes BMW Hiedfeld is gone, if he doesnt though i cant see them geting rid of him as there isnt really anyone 2 replace him with.
I bet Vettel is spewing he signed with Red Bull wen he mite have got the chance to get back in2 the BMW as they were part of his junior program as well as Red Bull.

True.
I guess just about every move depends on Alonso!
I think hes been linked with just about every team!
Vettel would be good with BMW, but hes been doing so well with just half-decent machinery, i guess he can stay!

This is bull, as if they will let him go, yeh he hasn't been as good as Kubica this year but he's only 8 points behind him, also he has three 2nd placings, you can't do much better than that with the BMW this year. At least last year Heidfeld really did OUTPERFORM Kubica, 61 points to 39, this year it's 64 to 56 with 3 races to go and the way it's heading i expect Heidfeld to edge him by the end of the year. Why the hell would he want to go to Honda who haven't done anything for years. Stupid if they let him go.

Mark my word...Honda will be a top team next year

But everything, as Fezza Army pointed out, hinges on Fernando Alonso...if he stays at Renault (which i think he will) then the driver changes will not be so drastic...if opts to go elsewhere, all hell will break loose

Heidfeld has been quietly going about his business, still, he wouldn't be 8 points behind Kubica if there wasn't that ludicrous safety car rule...Kubica by far and away, owing mostly to age, has the brighter future

Agree totally about honda. The started developing next years car in March this year, and have been one of the teams pineering KERS. Plus the Ross Brawn factor i think Honda, may not be with McLaren n Ferrari, but wont be to far behind them. As for Alonso, he is just playing the teams off eachother, he already knows where he is going he is just trying to bargain the price up. My bet is either BMW or Honda, Nick Fry did say a while ago that he was going to chase after Alonso, and they maybe a dark horse. I know i'd be heading there

Agreed.
Honda cant be as bad as the last couple of years. Ross Brawn is huge for them.
Fingers crossed they can go back to their old form of '04-'06!

Always rated quick nick, him and Button would be a pretty good combo.

If it is dependent on where Alonso moves to, who takes his spot at Renault next season?

I don't see Alonso moving, i think he'll stick with Renault on 2009 then look to move to another team. As for Heidfeld, he has been as good as any other driver the last 5 races and if BMW get rid of him, then that's a farce, they should be challenging for race wins next season and the Drivers and Constructors Championships and what more do you want than a driver who is always consistently in the points. Mind you Alonso is still the best going so maybe it could be worth the risk, there are also rumors that Kubica has a frosty relationship with BMW and so it could be Alonso and Heidfeld in 09', who knows.

Nup Heikki is confirmed at McLaren next season...if the situation arises...do they:

a) Take a new comer (Di Grassi) and keep Piquet?
b) Take on Barrichello (as he would be dumped from Honda with Heidfeld taking his seat) and keep Piquet?
c) Take on Barrichello and a new comer?

hmmmm

I say if Renault lose Alonso is to try and get Ralf Schumacher back of all people, yes you might think I'm crazy but for one year it could be a good idea. Thoughts??

Piquet has not had a good year...i dont reckon renault would be terribly happy with him.
He would definately be the second driver, if he stays that its.

Yeh heard this, very good news indeed, so now it's either Alonso stays or Honda for 2009.

Agree totally, Although the past two wins for Alonso will help make his mind up, i still think there is something to come out about the decision. Both Honda and Renault have yet to confirm their lineups so obiously its between them, i hope it is Honda, because his development abilities will bring them back up to the pointy end of the field, make the title fight a 5 team compitition, McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, BMW and Honda, it would be great for fans and great for the sport as a whole.

I'd be tempted to add Toro Rosso atleast, and maybe even Red bull to that mix
when the renault engine gets strapped into the red bull, and the new ferrari engine in the toro rosso, with the aero packs on those cars courtesy of Adrian Newey, they could be seriously competetive.
