yeh, sounds like I was mis-informed about the figures, my mistake.

Although I would imagine the figures would be about even when you factor in that Victoria, SA and WA are all very centralised, from memory Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide cover about 75% of those states population whilst Queesland is only about 40% in Brisbane and Syndey is about 60%.

League died because Storm lost? Is that the consensus?
Victorians are not as fickle as you are assuming them to be. Many are just bandwagoners that will celebrate a GF win and nothing else.

What everyone fails to take into account when talking ratings are the regionals - that's a third of the market.

Combining metro and regionals:

SoO Game 3 - 3,382,000
SoO Game 1 - 3,328,000
SoO Game 2 - 3,299,000
AFL Grand Final - 3,094,000

Scratch that I wasn't mis-informed.

Anyway I agree with Bateman.

Despite being a RL fan and a massive opponent of AFL there is no way that league would've hauled the AFL in, even without SL. The AFL pulled the right chain in having membership as the cornerstone of their game, whereas league and their reliance on clubs turned out (after 100 years) to be the wrong course.

Rugby League is a game attractive to TV, hence the FTA ratings and the diominance on PayTV, AFL has the crowds and the money.
