Does anyone know the story with the rookie draft? I don't understand it.

The eagles have had some pretty good talent come out of it.
dean Cox is the best the best of them. but I know in the last year, wilkes, mcnamara and davis have all come out of it. they are some pretty good pickups for free.

The rookie draft is held after everything else and is for players who didn't get picked up in the main draft. Basically each club is entitled to draft several players onto a "rookie" list. I'm not sure of the exact details, but I think they have to be under a certain age and they aren't allowed to have played more than a few AFL games.

If a player in the main list gets put on the long-term injury list they can "elevate" someone from the rookie list. When the original player is passed medically fit the rookie has to get dropped back down. There is a mechanism to bring a player up permanently, but I think it can only be done when a senior player is delisted. I'm not sure of the details.

Here's a tip.

Xavier McMahon (Marist/Eastlake) will go to the Sydney Swans rookie list in simliar fashion to Aaron Bruce (St. Edmunds/Eastlake).

You heard it here first.

I personally think there's no need for the rookie list

well they use to have lists of 52 then reduced it then teams complained that they didn't have enough players,i say they should just be put on the playing list normally and increase the salary cap to cover the extra costs of having say 46 players on a list

i think it's good for project players or blokes who fill a specific need.

peverill in his first season was one of the best taggers around and had a serviceable career. alwayn davey is also a ripper. bellchambers for us is a perfect rookie listed player. big lump of a kid but a few years away from a quality ruckmen.

Reminds me, 52 of the lists when the Eagles joined the expanded comp, 35 of the Eagles list.

Expand the salary cap - what about the Melbourne clubs that cant cut the mustard now, bigger subsidy?

Mindless, that was the party line - did they pick 2nd raters deliberately or was it an opportunity to lock up an extra 17 players. You really have a low opinion of Vic club recruiting from those days Os.

Idiot eh !!!

Alzheimers is obviously affecting your memory. In the days of 52-player lists there was a Reserves competition, as well as a VFA competition.

The rookie draft is for those deemed not good enough to be picked up and put on the list proper but might be able to deliver something. If they removed the rookie list these guys would just as likely not get picked up anyway.

Although maybe Richmond should opt out of the National Draft and just do the rookie one instead we seem to do a little better out of that one.
