I was just thinking about this today and thought i'd (re-)introduce it in the forum.
Personally I like the one lap dash - puts pressure on drivers to perform. More skilful. More on the line. However it does leave little room for error and can ruin your race. The 3 session run is more strategic in the end i'd say. And better for the fans.

I think qualifying should be all about the quickest cars going as quick as they can...used to love the old system where it was 1 hour and drivers just went nuts, trying to get faster and faster each run (think Senna beating the rest of the field at Monaco by over 1.5 seconds)...but i can see why the 3 session is good...there is nail biting for the fans 3 times during 1 hour...3 nail biting moments in a race don't happen in 3 whole races!
Ah well i don't care...as long as F1 goes nowhere

I've pretty much enjoyed all three types we have had in the recent past. The current system is pretty fun though there is a lot of dead time and drivers pretty much only do two flyers per segment. I agree with the Doctor that i'd like to see the fastest cars going the fastest so wouldn't mind seeing the race fuel/tyre restrictions s*****ped from Q3 and just let them have at it on the best treads and see them finishing their fast lap with barely a whiff of 100 RON (or whatever thaey use) in the tank.

Definitely the new one is better than the one lap dash, but the best was the old format of 1 hour qualfying. When you go to the Qualfying or Practice sessions, you want to see the cars as much as possible and with the one lap dash that wasn't possible. That's why the new system is better, plus there's more excitment.

i'm a fan of the old 1 hour qualifying session, but out of the 2 options in the poll i'd pick the 3 session knockout qualifying

I Had a thought which may work or be completely stupid, but have a think about it.
Why not incorperate the old 1 hour rule with the one lap dash with a twist.
First the drivers all go out for a 30min session to determine the fastest cars on light fuel loads. Then have a one lap dash to decide the grid positions again on light fuel
i.e. 1st v 2nd from the 30 min session fight for pole 3rd v 4th to decide positions on the second row, etc
But if a car fails to finish the last or runs out of fuel before getting back to the pits they must start from the back of the grid.

I'm defenitly a fan of the old system. personnally my favorite qualifying system is the one they use for V8's at the Enduro's they have a session where cars go out when they want, then the best 10-15 cars have a one lap dash at the end now that is awesome!

It does do all that...but from memory - the main reason for that system was because the smaller teams at the time (Minardi etc) were complaining about not receiving the same air time as the front runners and thus were not getting the same sponsorship offers as them. Great for the smaller teams...but i don't want to go to a grand prix meet on a saturday and see one 1hr practice session (big woop, cars are doing race simulations) and then 1 lap per car for qualifying...that's not value for money

The 1 hour session was good, but it didnt have the pizzazz that the 3 x knock-out session does!

The 3 sessions are great in my opinion. Its the best for the fans as the drivers need to come out and be fast for longer than in the 1 hr session, and the single lap was good in theory by putting pressure on the drivers to preform, but was massivly boring to watch. The way it is now is good because the fastest will usually get pole, but the field can also be mixed up if a top driver crashes or fails to consistantly preform though the hour
