I recomend people (especially people that aren't great at the sport, like myself) play at Par 3 Golf Courses, they are a lot cheaper and a lot of fun. With a good solid 9 Iron whack you can be on the green in one, where as Normal Courses with Par 4's and Par 5's, you often drive into the bushes and trees (or the nearby paddock) - which is quite annoying!

I've lost so many golf balls on Normal Courses but on the Par 3 Course I haven't lost one ball yet! And that is after about 20 rounds of golf!

My best score on the Par 3 I play at is 75, which is better than my 92 i got on my first round!!

nah i think MCA is talking about courses where the holes are 60-150m in length each-ish. There is Embleton golf course in Perth, but I think that actually has a couple of par 4's from memory, but I think they are the sort of courses being discussed here.

And I agree with what MCA said - they are great for people new to playing golf or for those who don't play very often.

In TIME Par 3 courses will be a modern day phenomium. TIME is everything and these days time = money. A day of golf is so TIME consuming with travel, practice time, 4.15hrs on the course, three pots on the 19th and travel again and all of a sudden you have 'lost' 7 hours on one day over the weekend. Play Sunday and nearly the same scenario. A top quality Par 3 with private facilities may be the answer to the problem of TIME. Due to the fact that all holes are of the shortened version you will find that 9 holes will be enough to fulfill your golfing habit and if not you always have the option of going around again, maybe off a second set of markers. This form of golf will kill the ugly TIME aspect and at the same TIME attract many more new comers to the game.Rolling Eyes

Theres a decent one on the Sunshine Coast west of Caloundra (between Aussie World, and Australia Zoo).

Down here in Wollongong, theres "Royal" Russell Vale, which is all par 3s except 2 par fours and 1 five. Can play 9 holes in a bit over an hour. Great fun.

Agree it is a great way to get started out playing, much more encouraging to be able to get the odd par and always be within one strike of the green rather than toughing it out on a par 72 when your new to the game

There are limitations though, producing a top quality par 3 course would require a good size membership base paying yearly sub fees not a great deal less than you would at a full course as maintenance fees would not be a great deal less. Still 18 tees and greens plus bunkers gardens etc which would need daily maintenance so costs would need to be offset by either higher green fees or sub fees. Would be quite a hard sell

Also no matter what skill level your at, seeing how far you can rip a driver is always going to one of the more enjoyable parts of the game, shorter courses you will lose this aspect
