http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-stage_fitness_test#Calculations I found this interesting. Shows the distance you've travelled at certain levels, how long you have to get from one side to the other, total time.

You want to get better at beep test and you are healthy (no disease or injury) then train by running long distances at 90% of max HR 2 - 3 times a week (some marathon runners average 300km a week!!). 220 - age = theoretical max HR. Make sure you recover well (at least one day between sessions) and eat well for recovery (1 - 2g carbs per kg body weight + 10 - 20g of protein within half hour pf training). Eat lots of low GI carbs, the day or so before (no training) and about 4hrs before you do the test. Hit up high GI carbs (1 x sports drink) about half an hour before hand so you've got plenty of energy reserves for the test.

I always just used to get up to 10.0 and then go and sit down. My thinknig back then was "what a waste of bloody time". Had a guy in our class who got up to 16 and then the tape stopped because that's as high as the recording went hahahahaha.
Seriously though, I didn't see it as a challenge at all back when I was younger - saw it as a waste of time.
