so all of Sydney's soccer fans turn out at once ... do you honestly think Sydney has only 80K League fans ? .... hell Manly had 75,000 of their own people at the Grand final this year almost the lot were in Maroon n White times that by 9 & you have Sydney's League population.

Not all of those people were from sydney you know. people travel to, people just go for one side because they hate the other side. leagues on the decline and if u dont want to admint that its ur problem. Football( or soccer as u league people call it)=rising popularity. League is on the decline

Well I was there & I'm not from Sydney so yes your half right but 80% of Grand final Crowds in the NRL are from Sydney. & really all your saying here is Leagues appeal stretches beyond Sydney, & it does Regional NSW & QLD is prime League real estate.... theres almost no other sport on the radar out bush.

the bottom line is, the consumer has more choices with how they spend their disposable income these days, in terms of the football codes and other things to do, league has suffered because if this, you keep trying harping back to the attendances of Origin and grand finals...yes they are good...but they are hardly spectacular for a game which has had 100 years to consolidate itself....aint a great return if you ask me. i used to be a big league fan but its gone stale, the skill level HAS NOT improved and its boring and predictable...ill give you a prime example.. 5th tackle options: when the attacking team is camped inside the opposition 20 metre line....Nearly every half back in the comp gets the ball on the 5th and looks to kick high to the winger in the hope of a 50/50 outcome...Andrew Johns started this with his banana kick on the outside of his foot...had a massive amount of success...and over time the other half backs started to realise that kicking for the winger was a good 50/50 option instead of running the ball....now very rarely do they run the ball at all...its boring, and predictable mate...you can see its gonna happen 3 tackles before they do it. league is dying mate, i applaud your defence of it though!

do you mean evidence ? the NRL has about 125,000 active fans in Sydney who attend games religiously ... a lot more then any other code thats about 1.5 million another 400K for Rep games & finals it is also watched by another on Average 1 million people in Sydney on FTA TV per week a lot more for Rep games & Finals & another million on pay TV a week thats 60 Million veiwers there abouts in a season in Sydney alone. they'd have to like the game to watch it ... if you didn't why else would you ? the level of interest vary's from the above religious ... to passive once or twice a year types of watchers but lets face it no other code in Sydney has this level of interest ! the grounds may not be full or in some cases anyhwere near it... but they aint watching anything else in anywhere near these numbers either. so to say 1 in 7 Sydneysiders is a League fan of some description is fair , its probably even conservative.

no its going through a phase.. Did you catch any of the Raiders in the latter half of the season just gone ? League evolves like any sport Defences are so good & so organised these days with full time professionalism , the bomb & grubber in behind the line is the only way through ... grinding defences in the mid 80's were stifling the spectacle aswell , then along came the Raiders & Broncos & the game opened up to a great attacking era.. The Raiders starting to throw it around a bit in the late half of this year & were a breath of fresh air scoring more tries from inside their half then any other side. we may be on the cusp of more ball movement in the game , but anyway... for me a bad game of League is still better then anything else.

mate you definately need a PR job with the NRL. lol
ok, so your ok with the bland attacking rugby league from halfbacks willing to kick for the winger on 90% of their 5th tackle options?? surely you expect more than that?

I'd like less tries from kicks yes but meh... Its League & I still enjoy plenty in the modern game , the Warriors V Storm Final , the Broncos V Storm final were just cracking sporting contests that you'd crawl over cut glass to witness. but getting back to the point you've raised , because the game is in the business of entertainment the administrators will do something if its required wether that be devaluing a try from a kick or whatever if it becomes pretty much the only way tries are being scored , they'll act.

fair call..... the one game i did really enjoy this season was parramatta vs brisbane in brisbane, brisbane looked dead in the last 5 minutes and scored (ironically from a kick from lockyer to his winger, but it was in the middle of the field which is a different example from wat i was whinging about)....if they start playing more ad lib football and threwit around like a hot potato then id be sweet with the game again.....

yeah... as the siren was sounding n all Lockyer from half way it bounced up to Kemp who darted over in the corner just brilliant. the U20's GF was decided in extra time in a similar way , with a pass inside to a support who crossed great stuff by the youngsters too.

Well put HRand on that about the Socceroos vs Qatar match, there was torrential rain before the match and when the game was mean't to be played yet still a decent turnout to the game considering the harsh weather. Say it was a team like Japan we play against than it would still be full even if rains like cats and dogs, it would definently not be like that raiderdave if it was Kangaroos vs NZ. Admiting that RL is going down the drain is the first step towards understanding the problem. Also your facts are equivalent to what Rebeca Wilson said about our beautiful game You must be smoking the same stuff as what Rebeca Wilson was smoking

I honestly think the idea of sport as entertainment is where a lot of sports have gone wrong, not just league Union with the ELVs Cricket with a 20/20 flood League with constant rule changes AFL does change rules but hasn't been dramatic Most people by nature are quite conservative and love a good bit of tradition which many sports are losing. Football does not do this and I think most sports could benefit from following footballs lead and not make sweeping changes. Coz on one hand League is entertainment as you put it, but on another it is a business. Continual video ref referrals are not entertainment, they were introduce to make sure they got it right, as careers can rely on one moment. I think League has a bit of an identity problem in regards to this, and the sad thing is the most passionate people are in the media, constantly criticising, whereas the CEO looks like he has never watched a game in his life.
