Benayoun threatens to leave Reds

Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun has threatened to leave after becoming frustrated at manager Rafa Benitez's policy of using him as a substitute.

The 28-year-old, who joined from West Ham for £5m in 2007, has made just four starts in 11 appearances this season.

Benayoun told Israel's Channel Five TV: "If the situation remains the same over the next few months, I will not want to continue as a Liverpool player.

"I hope it changes as I want to stay and prove myself but it won't be easy."

Benayoun made his name at Israeli side Maccabi Haifa and Spanish outfit Racing Santander before moving to West Ham in 2005.

He switched to Anfield in 2007 and resisted a move away this summer despite interest from Italian side Roma and Dutch giants Ajax.

The Israeli international has made 41 appearances for Liverpool but he fears that his playing time will remain restricted following the team's good start to the season.

The Reds are joint top of the Premier League with Chelsea, having lost only once, picking up 32 points out of a possible 39.

"The fact that I have spent so much time on the bench, while there has been a winning formula on the pitch, tells you everything," added Benayoun.

"I know I'm at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and that there are many good players like Ryan Babel and Jermaine Pennant who sometimes aren't even in the squad, but it's not much fun sitting on the bench all the time.

"I always wanted to prove myself good enough for Liverpool, and I thought I did well last season to contribute so many goals and assists.

"But there seems to be more competition for places this time, and if I continue to be on the sidelines, I would not want to stay, even though it is Liverpool.

"Maybe I will have to accept that and start learning another language, such as Italian or French or even Russian."

he's a good squad player but he has to realise that he isnt good enough for the starting XI. When the season becomes hectic over christmas - he will be needed

He will not be needed after this year anyway due to Babel's natural progression and the signing of another right sided midfielder., most probably that polish bloke playing the bundesliga who's name I cannot remember at the moment- puba

we'll use him over christmas more, and sell him at the end of the year. his best position just happens to be the one that stevie g is occupying, so he's forced out onto the wings. we will buy that polish bloke to give DK some competition on that flank, because as much as i like yossi, he's just completely second rate compared to the workhorse.

I believe he is class. Brings alot of experience and professionalism to the team as well as making an impact when he gets game time. Obviously not a first team player but he should deffinately be kept in the squad.

Gee your a clever little fool.

Benayoun is the most creative player they have in their team.

Too bad arsenal dont have him. He would look nice on the right side of our midfield.

100% spot on.

One of the few current players happy to dribble with the ball. A versatile player who adds a new dynamic to the team when he's on the pitch... and at £5m one of our best signings in the last few years. Give him a pay rise or more game time.

when did i say he wasn't creative you muppet?

he's great off our bench as a creative spark, that's why i mentioned garcia, but if benny doesnt' want to play that role then he can go, he doesn't command a 1st team spot and never will (maybe for your mob he might Laughing Laughing Laughing )

agreed, he played awesome with west ham.

as far as im concerned he never brings much to the liverpool side, i see him and the likes of young lucas leiva as liabilities if nothing else.
