Hope this isn't true. Yep it's true. It was in today's paper. She's had surgery to shorten her tendons and I guess try and manipulate the hoof and joint positions but they are considering putting her down I think, but are waiting to see how the latest operation has gone. Sunline was the first champion I saw as a young girl becoming interested in racing, so I am very saddened to hear of the news. I lost a horse to founder once, resulting from joint issues regarding the pedal bone and fetlock, he too was an ex-racehorse. Anyway, here is the article by Tony Meany from Courier Mail: CHAMPION racehorse Sunline is fighting for her life and stablemate Boundless has chipped a fetlock joint and will not start at Sandown today. Sunline, who was retired in 2003, is having complications following surgery for colic earlier in the year and is suffering from laminitis. Laminitis is a disease where the pedal bones drop through the hoof causing the horse to founder, resulting in severe lameness and death. Boundless's trainer Stephen McKee yesterday revealed his father Trevor would have to make a decision about whether Sunline will be put down. Sunline, 13, was twice Horse Of The Year and considered the greatest middle-distance mare of the modern era. Sunline won 32 of 48 starts including the 1999-2000 Cox Plates and amassed more then $13.3 million in stakes. _______ And another article: Sunline battling life-threatening laminitis SUNLINE (Desert Sun [GB]), the beloved Australasian superstar of the late 1990s and early 2000s, has developed a life-threatening case of laminitis, according to reports in the Australian Courier Mail and Herald Sun online at news.com.au. The 13-year-old mare underwent surgery for colic in July, and her battle with laminitis ensued as a complication. "She hasn't been in a good way at all," her former trainer Steve McKee told the Herald Sun. "We had a guy go over from Sydney to operate on her and cut the tendons in the legs, which changes the angle of the feet. We hope that will help her recover, but it's still too early to say."

Very upsetting to hear this great champion is suffering like this? Didn't know it was that bad?
Hope she can come through all of this, but it doesn't sound good at all.

Thank you Dr E. wrote:... other than horses I've had an interest in, I only have 2 horse photos in my games room ... Kingston Town and Sunline ... come on girl, we want you to get better and produce some champions of your own!
... anyone aware of anything she has thrown to date??? First one wasn't going too flash. Think it was called sunstrike......or something similar by Rock of Gibraltar. Theres one by Zabeel that has apparently shown a bit of abiliy and shouldn't be far away frfom its first start. Also remember reading she'd been in foal to Hussonet. Love to see another good one!!! think the Zabeel one was born on Cox Plate day too..... The planets are aligning....

Specialist vets took the drastic step of cutting tendons in both her forelegs three weeks ago to try to ease the lameness.
And, although the mare's former co- trainer Stephen McKee says Sunline has responded to the operation, he says she will have to continue to improve.
McKee said reports that his father, Trevor, who owns the 13-year-old Sunline, was having to decide whether to put the mare down were exaggerated - but the decision might have to be made if she did not improve.
"You can be assured she won't be left suffering, but we're not at that stage yet. She's a lot more mobile than she was before surgery, she can move round gingerly, and we're hopeful she'll recover OK."
This was written in a NZ paper today. Fingers crossed

Steve Mckee reported this morning that the great mare is on the improve. He went on to say that Sunline would take 6 to 8 months to recover.

Interview with Thane Green this morning made me feel sick in the guts. Doesn't sound like she's improved much.
He described her as "only being able to shuffle 6 or so inch's at a time."
On a brighter note, Sun Ruler (Zabeel - Sunline) her second foal, won a barrier trial. Apparently wouldn't load in two prior trial attempts, but went in "like a lamb" this time and he burnt them off over 1200m by 3 lengths hard held, in the fastest time of the day.
Nominated for the NZ Derby, and will have his first raceday start in 2-3 weeks.
Very exciting.
Please get well soon Sunline.
