WAYNE Bennett was ready to become an assistant coach to Darren Lockyer in 2013 in a rearguard bid to extend his stint with the Brisbane Broncos.
The succession plan, advanced by Bennett in 2007, was rejected by the Broncos board, and was the catalyst for the supercoach ultimately finding his way to St George Illawarra.
The failed bid by Bennett is revealed in his biography, which is released today.
Bennett recounts that in February 2007 he fronted a Broncos board meeting at which directors wanted to talk to him about his failed negotiations with Roosters in 2006 and a Broncos coaching succession plan.
Bennett said he told directors that his assistant Ivan Henjak was capable of doing the job, but recalls "somebody" at the meeting said Henjak did not have a high enough profile.
Henjak was this year appointed Broncos head coach for 2009 and 2010 after Brisbane had firstly had talks with Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy.
"If that's what you're looking for, Darren Lockyer will make a fine coach," Bennett said he told directors.
"But you are better off having him play as long as you can,"
"The plan I suggested had Locky playing through until 2010, coming back as assistant coach to me in 2012 and (then) taking over. I would always be in the background for him. I could become assistant for 12 months. I said: 'He mustn't be rushed into the job'."
What Bennett suggested would have given him three more seasons as Brisbane head coach beyond the expiration of his existing contract at the end of 2009.
The coaching plan is just one revelation in The Man in The Mirror (ABC Books).
Bennett also delves into the recent ***** scandal that engulfed the Broncos and how he instructed his players to take the "Shane Warne" approach to dealing with the drama.
"I talked to them about adversity - used Shane Warne as an example because that guy got through more personal dramas in a week than most guys do in a lifetime," Bennett wrote.
