was looking at a rugby exchange thing my club was doin with arizona state university, and their site reckons rugby is one of the fastest growing sports over there! makes sense, i've seen quite a few signs on american tv programs suggesting an increase in awareness of the game over there, not only matches, but mentions on letterman, leno etc. as well as a bloke on wipeout last night running down the ramp with a gilbert tucked under his arm! all rather insignificant, but possibly early signs? anyway my question is this, do you think rugby can compete with NFL in particular in the states? does it have the abillity to become one of the big sports over there? Am I right in thinking its already on its way? EDIT: some interesting reading if anybody's got some spare time: http://www.usarugby.org/default.asp

I have always maintained that once the yanks actually grasp rugby and the money comes into play, they will become unbeatable.

I don't think it will. It'd have to compete with American Football, Baseball, Soccer and Lacrose...All of which have Major League status.
Can't see there being a Major League Rugby over there.

Can't see there being a Major League Rugby over there. 300 million people - I don't think finding the people is aproblem. They love a fast moving game hence poo fball got a foothold and is now near the top. They love rugby, they just have to get it to the masses and watch out.

I think the governing board is being quite clever about getting the game out there too, really focussing on schools and colleges. I think the south might be a lost cause, but certainly if they appeal to the kids and establish the game at interschool/college as the game is based in aus there is real potential as for the other major sport rugby in aus has to compete with AFL, League and Cricket in a much smaller population! if Rugby in the states could grasp a hundredth of the US population it'd be a force to be reckoned with internationally!

i think he's taking the *****! and yeah union is established in some colleges in the midwest, but i think what it needs is a viable professional opportunity for players.
