The kid is also a bit of a goose if reports are on the money about him... Ability is one thing, humility and and grace are another!! And what I would think is that they both go hand in hand in that position. He is to much of a big head to ever be a true 10, which is basically your teams director... The Reds should revert Barnes back to 10 and(here is a left field choice) play peter hynes at 12... before eddie jones lost the plot and the respect of all players at the Reds, Hynes was in great form in the midfield before he had a ankle injury. Great exceleration, great defender, ball distribution would obviously need to be worked on but still very capable!! Maybe try and buy a world class 12 as our marquee player... who knows i just don't think cooper is the answer short term or long term

I like your assessment. I have never felt Cooper was of the class needed at this level. There is just something missing that says'greatness'.
I also like your idea re Hynes. I think wing is far too loose for him and gives him options he can't handle.

I think mclinden will surprise, he is a very capable player in first or second 5/8 and fullback. Need some composure with an old head.

You know what... I think everyone would rather have the reds to have spent the money on youth and been suprisedby them!! Not some bloke coming back from league to get a pension cheque!! Worst buy of the year.... Don't care if he plays well, it doesnt realyy send a good message, lets see how many kids walk away from qld rugby because we bought this bloke... And they would have had 10 years with the reds... would be interesting to tally the players who are blocked because of this joke and see what becomes of them... I just can't agree with the signing of that bloke

Sort of off topic here but does anyone know which club Daniel Braid is going to play for when he arrives?

And in his off the bench debut he saves the Wallabies day!!

He is a freakish talent and only a very young man. Give him a break and time to mature and in time he will prove you both wrong.Rolling Eyes

a real enigma scored a great try for his QLD debut. I don't think anybody doubts his talent, i think he has to mentally mature and i think he is worth persueing. However, we can only carry him for limited time before selectors decide to leave him for a season or two.
If that happens it will show his worth! i hope it doesn't get to that though because the guy can play some freakish rugby!

He ain't on big money be assured, nor will he threatening any positions. If the so called youth are better, let them compete and win a contract. If they were better they'd get a chance. Enough *****ycoddling of young players. Step up or p!ss off. Mclinden isn't standing in the way of anyone, if there are better players around for the money they would have been given a contract.

he fact of the matter is he is a better defender than most in the reds squad, and will add composure to a pretty young team. Its a matter of balance and with a massive drain of experience leaving the reds last year i believe it is not a bad signing. Not the greatest either, mind you but sound enough.

Everyone bagged schifcoske but i thought he was a fair buy, and for a lot more money than mclinden.

Forget the money or the size of the contract then, lets render that irrelevent then.. So if he is no threatening positions why is he there???? Now that he is there if he isn't threatening positions the boob who recruited him then should be sacked!! NOT CHALLENGING for position, is that supposed to make us feel better about the signing?? Is he there as a professional trainer?? That is a disgrace!!! Lastly I cannot fathom how the Reds took the say so of the Clinton S.. A noted rugby scout these days is he?? I just can't understand that people cannot see thru the fact both former raiders team mates, both good mates and it is the old I will put in a good word with Phil "Yes Sir No Sir Three bags Full sir" Mooney and they will throw a contract and a squad spot to you!!! Please this is a disgrace!!

What has he done to push to the front of the que?? You say the youth need to step up or ***** off, fair point in theory... But how are they able to step up when they when they have there run blocked by a bloke who hasn't played any form of rugby union in 14 years!! Not sure how he has earned his spot! When if you are being fair and he was that great a player wouldn't he be back or never left an NRL club, maybe played origin or even City Country... But we have this obsession with "top flight" leaguies!! Wake up there are more teams in professional rugby league in australia and the UK then the 4 professional teams in all of Australia for rugby...so of course more players make it...doesn't actually mean they are more talented!! My opinion is that if I am going to pay my good hard earned $$$ to watch the Reds loose for the next season or so I would rather they build something rather than have some old bloke in here blocking a kid who will probably end up at the force or the brumbies and then play in the 2011 world cup and kill it!! Then we will be back to square 1!!

And please you are taking the p*ss by saying he is a good defender!! this is the same bloke the raiders used to hide out on the wing and fullback in defence!! You are either his manager or a family member to honestly think he is a good defender!!

BACK THE YOUTH

Ihear what you are saying about developing youth but that is exactly what the Reds are doing. Their backs squad would have to be the youngest and most inexperienced of the S14 sides. They have the 06 and 07 OZ Schools fullbacks in their full 32 man squad for 09, a number of the Academy players, Anae, Slipper andMorahan train with the full squad, the Academy is oversubscribed to the extent that three of this years school leavers are being accomodated in the NTS in 2009, and NTS is chockers. That's a fair old commitment to a youth policy I'd say.

McLinden is a bit of an unknown quantity in rugby, I'll give you that, but the greatest assets he will bring to the squad apparently will be experience, professionalism and a cool head. That will be invaluable stuff for the many young guys in the team. Talent wise, he is very versatile, and is one of the quickest guys in the squad. And I am sure his tackling skills and toughness from years of professional league will come in handy.

There are no guarantees but I think Mooney and Co know what they are doing. He will threaten for positions. The year that McLinden spends with the Reds will give the likes of Davies, Toua and Morahan, just that extra time I think they need.

I'm in agreement with Kremmen that he actually may be a value buy.

I'm not totally against the selection of McLinden, he does represent a mature head in amongst the young guns. I would prefer him to have had more rugby experience to pass on, but he has been around professional footy for a while. He was fairly dynamic for the Raiders (where's raider dave when you need him?)

I see that Daniel Braid has had his first run with the Reds. I am a bit concerned by the reference to a long term ankle injury. I hope he recovers quickly as he is the one that the Reds need to fire

Not quite true -
he is contracted to the Stingrays until the end of the S14 season. They will use him in promotions etc and as soon as the s14 season finishes his contract allows him to pss off overseas which he will do. Do not expect him to appear at all for the Stingrays on a rugby field.

Anthony would have had to of beefed up a fair bit during the offseason if your expecting him to be starting at hooker... his a centre... and i dont think mclinden will walk straight into 15 either.

horwill won't be there for the first few games, i think mooney will stick with cooper at ten, and 15 will be very very interesting! only a month and a bit to go now, very very excited!
