TRAINER David Hayes has suffered a major double blow, two top-class imports to his stable dying with 12 hours.

Changingoftheguard died last night following complications from a simple gelding operation and Our Aqaleem, a leading chance in Saturday's Australian Cup, smashed a shoulder in trackwork at Flemington this morning.

Our Aqaleem was taken immediately to the Werribee Veterinary Hospital where he was put down.

The pair were Hayes' leading chances in this year's 150th Melbourne Cup.

This is just not right. I can't believe it. Such poor luck hopefully turns around this weekend in victory for the Hayes stable.

That is really sad news. Gelding a horse is a simple op but it is amazing what can go wrong. We had a vet geld one a few years ago that we lost. The vet gelded him standing up and he had a hearner {not sure of the spelling}he was taken to the Qjd uni but had to be put down. If they cut them to long they leave in a lot of hormone and to short they can not make enough.

As I understand it (and I could be wrong) You have to put em under anescetic when you geld - and that is the the real risk. Some times they don't recover from being knocked out. It can happen - and it is not negligence. Hey, it can even happen to humans. Its why you have to sign all of those waivers when they put you under. Probably one of the reasons that you have to notify insurers prior to gelding. I hope they did.

RIP to both horses. Died way before their time.

went to my old mans joint to watch the footy and racing on the weekend. he has been in racing industry since a boy....now works at magic millions...

"I killed a horse yesterday" he told me.

"Your kidding, what happened" i said back.

"Here have a look at this...." shows me Our Aqualeems form - pointing out all the necessary bits for a bloke who was obviously keen it would win the Aus Cup.

"It was a certainty," he said.

"I went and backed it at fixed odds, next thing i hear its dead"

"My money killed it"

"If i didnt back it, it would have still been alive and with a Gr 1 to its name..."

I knew he could stop a train with his 8money, now hes actually killing horses with it.... what a horror punter

Pen, this is to me a horrible reply. I am quite apalled at your post. These horses have been through such trauma, and you reply with a thing like that. I just find it hard to believe people like you exist. Thankfully we have the genuine horselovers that post here... we are so sad when these things happen, we all take a step back.. dont need your ****py posts. We all respect the horses that have passed, and your comments, to me anyway are revolting.

Please dont speak on behalf of every poster in this forum, especially when they don't agree with your sentiments.

There was nothing wrong with your post pen

Fay is entitled to her opinion and I think there were enough references in her post (in bold) to suggest she was posting her opinion

I agree that pen was probably only making a tongue in cheek gest, but there is no doubt that some people will interpret these things definitely. For some people the death of racehorses is not a matter to joke about

That said, lets get back to what this Forum is normally all about - good natured chat amongst folk who love racing and the horses/people that are part of it

Yeah fair enough call Buster. I love horses and horse racing, so the we are sad, we all take a step back, we all respect etc etc is what I was referring to. Probably a bit hasty on my behalf, as you have quite rightfully pointed out that Fay was only expressing her opinions in her post.

My apologies.

I challenge someone to find another post on sportal where the poster has realised their mistake Razz

It is an old punters way.

If you have backed a horse and it dies during the race, you are said to have killed it (especially of you have had a lot of money on it)

Go ask some old punters about Dulcify, you would get more than half automatically giving this response.

get a grip faytiges... and anyone else who is upset about my post. you are a horselover are you? i spose you go to pony club and think it is normal to walk around a racing stable feeding them carrots.

You act as if you lost a loved one, did you know the horse? are you sad when a cat you never met dies? gimme a break.

I love horses more than i love racing, and i have been around them all my life. if you had half a clue you wouldnt carry on like you have.

If you really think they have gone through so much trauma maybe you should join greenpeace or one of those groups who want racing banned.

Horses die all the flipping time, its just that these were well performed horses from the hayes stable that you are upset. are you upset about the horses that die every day in stables around the country? you would never be happy if it was the case.

I think you are being a drama queen and should keep your teary garbage to yourself.

And to qualify, i have only ever harmed one horse in my life, and if ever a horse needed a flogging this was it. A few cuts with the lead across the hind quarters. And before you jump on that with your ill-informed bs - a few cuts doesnt mean blood, a few cuts means a few slaps.

As i said - get a grip!
