Hi everyone, in conjuction with the Ford Ranger Cup and KFC 20/20 Big Bash threads, this thread is designed for all the chatter concerned with Sheffield Shield cricket.
2 games have so far been played, with South Australia cruising to victory over Tassie, and Qld batting on for first innings points over in Perth.
Will Shaun Tait get back into 4 day games? Will Phil Hughes continue his top order dominance? Is Scott Walter or James Smith the next big thing? Can North/McDonald/Watson cement themselves as Australia's no.6?
How will your team go?

How will your team go? Nice idea but with 30 games over the next 5 months a lot of stuff and comments will get lost. People tend to talk about their own state when that game is on eg NSW v WA at SCG which overlaps the Qld v Tas game at the Gabba.

Great idea FP. always good to chat about Sheffield Shield. As opaque says, most poeple chat in the match threads, but could be a good way to have general chat about form, results etc.
For mine, the Vics will probably go close to winning it again. Side will stay largely the same, and were the dominant side by a fair way last year. Bowling attack strong and i expect that Clint McKay will be the leading wicket taker by years end.
I think they will meet the Blues in the final, with the Bulls and the SACA's holding up the ladder.
I am hoping that one of Michael Hilll or Aiden Blizzard can push on to establish themselves in the side for much of the year.

NSW would dominate but so many play for Australia. Best squad out of all the states at full potential
1. Hughes 2. Jacques 3. Katich (c) 4. Clarke 5. Thornley 6. Henriques 7. Haddin 8. Lee 9. Hauritz 10. Clark 11. Bracken
12. Bollinger 13. Warner 14. Rohrer 15. Lambert
This is the best squad of 15 in the world at domestic level

I'm obviously not boasting to have the biggest names but here's our best Shield squad:
Queensland Bulls - Sheffield Shield
1. Ryan Broad 2. Nick Kruger 3. Wade Townsend 4. Lee Carseldine 5. Craig Philipson 6. James Hopes 7. Chris Simpson 8. Chris Hartley 9. Ryan Harris 10. Chris Swan 11. Scott Walter
12. Ben Laughlin 13. Nathan Rimmington 14. Nathan Reardon 15. Glen Batticciotto
Having lost Matthew Hayden, Martin Love, Clinton Perren, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Ashley Noffke, Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson.

Bailey Spins into ActionSouth Australia may look to spin its way to victory in its Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria as Cullen Bailey breaks into the Redbacks' 12-man squad for the match starting on Friday. The Adelaide Oval pitch is not known for prestigious spin before Christmas but with the slow bowlers claiming nine of 31 wickets (including four to all-rounder Aaron O'Brien) in the opening Shield game at the ground, Bailey has come into calculations. Redbacks coach Mark Sorell said the turn seen in that match against Tasmania could work in the leg-spinner's favour this time around. "With it (the pitch) being under the covers for as long as it was, we didn't expect it to be like that but it gripped and turned quite nicely," Sorell said. "He (Bailey) picked up some wickets in the Futures game not that long ago. He feels like they are coming out well, feels confident so that's important, so like I said we'll make sure we get the right balance come game day." South Australia will be forced to make at least two changes to its line-up with Mark Cleary (back) and Chris Duval (stomach) still struggling with their injuries. If Bailey gets the nod, the final pace position will go to Jake Haberfield (who was 12th man against Tasmania) or the forgotten man of Redbacks cricket Allan Wise. Wise was a big signing for South Australia last season but didn't have the impact he would have liked with his new state. Sorell said he had a chance to climb up the pecking order if he performs this week. "He started ok with us and then he got injured in the game in Sydney and then he missed out for a bit and some young guys came in and probably took his place and performed pretty well," Sorell said on Wise's first season with the Redbacks. "He has worked on swinging the ball more in the off-season and he's come back doing that, so we think that's a good asset for Allan which is a bonus given his height." "We know he's pretty tight with his bowling but to be able to swing it is an added bonus." Meanwhile the Bushrangers will be dusting of the whites for their first Shield clash of the summer after making the Champions League Twenty20 finals in India. David Hussey will skipper the side with Cameron White on Australian duties in India, while Peter Siddle and Jon Holland are also away with the national side. Nick ***ell, Chris Rogers and Lloyd Mash are in the squad for the first time this season after missing the Champions League Twenty20 while John Hastings has been rewarded for his strong finish to last season's first-class competition and is likely to be in the starting XI. Victorian coach Greg Shipperd is confident the side can produce their best at Adelaide Oval despite a limited build-up to the contest. "It is a big challenge for our players to switch mindsets and the physical challenges are different as well," Shipperd said of going straight from Twenty20 cricket in India to Shield cricket. "The bowlers instead of bowling four overs a day now have to go in and think about bowling 20-25 overs a day, so the management of our group early in the season is going to be critical for us to start the season well - which has been one of our strengths." http://sportal.com.au/default.a...-spins-into-action-80321

Swan gets BullishQueensland will welcome back paceman Chris Swan for its first Sheffield Shield match at the Gabba this season. Swan has recovered from the groin complaint that kept him out of the Bulls' opening Shield match against Western Australia and is almost certain to lead an inexperienced pace attack against Tasmania in a match starting on Sunday. He's been joined in the squad by Nathan Rimmington, who was rewarded for taking a hat-trick against the Warriors in last week's Ford Ranger Cup win. The duo replaces injured pacemen Ben Laughlin (stomach) and Grant Sullivan (hamstring) in the squad. Rimmington's feat against the Warriors, though, makes him the only player in world cricket to have claimed a Twenty20 and List A (or one-day) hat-trick. Leg-spinner Daniel Doran has also been included in the side after being in the original 13-man squad for the Warriors game in Perth. In a warm-up to the Shield contest, the Bulls clash with Tasmania on Friday in the Ford Ranger Cup. Queensland Bulls Chris Simpson (c), Glen Batticciotto, Ryan Broad, Lee Carseldine, Ben Cutting, Daniel Doran, Chris Hartley, Nick Kruger, Nathan Rimmington, Chris Swan, Wade Townsend, Scott Walter (12th man to be named). http://sportal.com.au/cricket-n.../swan-gets-bullish-80318

SACA's did well. Should really have knocked them over for 220 or less.
Still, plenty of time to build a big innings and put pressure on the Redbacks from here.

Rogers and Hodge are carving it up in these last few overs. Rogers has played a superb innings so far and looks set for a huge Summer.
VIC 1/208 C. Rogers 119* (140) B. Hodge 45* (66) N. ***ell 40.
Dan Christian the wicket taker for SA.

1-219 after 50 overs is a pretty good one-day score
